Who doesn't love Falstaff? Tipsy, scheming, amorous, a braggart, a clown, a scoundrel, fumbling and incompetent, ever-optimistic, a true force of nature, Falstaff was originally modelled on Sir John Oldcastle but he is in some ways a self-mocking portrait of Shakespeare himself - 'fall staff' = 'shake spear'. By a strange twist of fate, meeting at the Boar's Head in Eastcheap, Falstaff becomes a drinking mate of the Prince of Wales, young Hal - the future Henry V. The scene on the t-shirt shows Falstaff pretending to be the King while Hal pretends to be his servant. The play contains the famous line, spoken by Falstaff, 'The better part of valour is discretion'.
